No, he can’t play goal. But defenseman Michael Downing tweeted this afternoon “Officially a Wolverine” and said he would be suiting up for the Maize n’ Blue in 2013.
The Detroit Catholic Central blue liner was the third overall pick in the USHL Futures Draft by Clark Cup Champion Dubuque, where he will be playing this season. Michael is listed as 6’3, 175 pounds on the DCC website.
Downing had a strong showing last month at the USA Hockey Select 16 Festival where he was considered one of the top handful of defensemen. He posted 1-2-3 in five games for Team Grey, which also featured Wolverine commit Alex Talcott.
Wrist Shot Hockey calls him a “very good skating defender with high-end offensive capabilities.”
Michael’s older brother Jake played 16 games with the USHL’s Omaha Lancers this past season.
