Michigan State 3, Michigan 2 – Final

By Jason Paul | January 29, 2010

Tonight’s game is on the Big Ten Network beginning at 7:05 p.m.  I will post updates here as I’m able to.

3rd Period

0:00 – Game is over, when it should be going to overtime.  You suck, Shegos!  Yeah, Michigan played like crap during the first 40 minutes.  But it’s a 60 minute game and they fought back during the final 20, and, not saying they deserved to win, but this game should have at least gone to over time.
0:08 – Penalty to Hagelin.  This one is pretty much over now.
0:32 – Michigan just got HOSED by Shegos.  Shot went off Palmisano’s glove, off the Michigan player’s chest, and rolled under Palmisano into the net, but Shegos blew the whistle quick and no goal.  That pretty much sums it up!
0:48 – First minute of the PP was bad.  Couldn’t set up anything and MSU kept clearing.  Now an empty net for Michigan.  Rust with a semi-open net and he sweeps the puck wide.  Shot by Moffie from the blue line is grabbed by Palmisano.
2:38 – Spartans goal is waived off.  Weak puck on Hogan goes off his stick straight into the air above the crease.  Summers tries to glove the puck but is nailed from behind before touching it by Andrew Rowe.  Rowe then gets the puck and puts it in the net.  Now called no goal and a penalty on Rowe.  Can they call a penalty on a review?  Then again, it’s Shegos and Wilkins, so anything is possible.
5:17 – Palmisano hangs on to a shot from the right boards.
6:46 – Michigan back to full strength
8:46 – Penalty to Luke Glendening for hooking.  17 seconds of 5×3 for MSU.
10:29 – Penalty to Michigan… They called Kampfer for elbowing on that?!  Even Fred Pletch was speechless when asked “what do you think about that?  A penalty on Kampfer?”  MSU player dumped the puck in, Kampfer hit him as he turned his body away, elbow did not make contact.  Ugh.
11:40 – Major penalty is over.
11:55 – Offsides on Michigan.  15 seconds left on the PP.
13:34 – Huge save by Palmisano.  Hagelin comes in off the right boards 2×1, centers in front to Kevin Lynch all alone and he fired it right into Palmisano (had the left side of the net open).  Rebound drops in front and Michigan can’t knock it in as Palmisano falls on it.
15:09 – Shot by Langlais held on to by Palmisano for the whistle.
16:15 – Bork! Bork! Bork! Hagelin on the PP gets the puck on the right side of the crease and sweeps the puck into the net.  U-M still on the PP.  Michigan still on a the one-man PP for four minutes.
16:42 – The penalties: Matt Grassi gets a 5 minute major for MSU is the big one.  Maybe for grabbing someone’s face mask?  Don’t know, they didn’t show a replay of it.  Michigan on a 5×3 for two full minutes.
16:42 – Penalty coming to MSU.  Now a lot of post-whistle scrumming.  Both boxes are full.  Still waiting for the penalties to get sorted out.
17:08 – Tropp gets the puck slipped to him heading to the net. Initial shot is stopped by Hogan, but he gets his own rebound and sneaks it in the corner.
17:55 – Penalties to Wohlberg and Torey Krug.  4×3 PP for MSU now.
18:06 – They called Lebler for roughing for that?!  Really?  God that’s lame.  Post-whistle, Lebler and a Spartan got tied up, the MSU player actually initiated the tie up, but Lebler was last to respond with a little shove so he’s gone to the box.

2nd Period

Apologies for the lack of updates this period.  I’m kinda at work =)

0:00 – End of the 2nd period: MSU 2, U-M 0
2:40 – Andrew Rowe beats Hogan shortside from the left dot.  Spartans up 2-0.
5:31 – Penalty to Greg Pateryn
6:02 – Shot by Moffie from the left circle is stopped by Palmisano and he covers as the penalty expires.
7:09 – Michigan did a good job of controlling the first minute of the PP, just no good shots on goal.  Shot off a leg into the netting.
8:03 – Penalty to MSU
10:00 – Michigan State just killed a penalty.  Score is still 1-0 State.

1st Period

0:00 – End of the 1st period: MSU 1, U-M 0
0:11 – Puck knocked on net and Palmisano covers as the MSU penalty expires.
0:40 – Another horrid PP by Michigan.  Can’t get set up, Spartans skating the puck around in the U-M zone, dumping it back to their zone, their player stands around with the puck killing time.  Ugh.
2:11 – Tripping on Michigan State
3:00 – Shots are 12-5 Michigan State
4:44 – Corey Tropp scores on the PP unassisted
5:49 – Carl Hagelin steals the puck in front of the MSU net, he shoots while falling down and the shot misses high and wide.  Penalty coming up to Michigan.
9:20 – 3×1 for MSU, great passing, pass right to left and the shot goes wide.
9:31 – 2×1 for MSU, centering pass is tipped.  3×2 for U-M the other way.  Shot in front is blocked, Glendening with a rebound spin-o-rama doesn’t get much on it and Palmisano covers for the whistle.
10:31 – Icing on Michigan.
11:56 – Penalty to Michigan is over.  Big hit by Zach Josepher.
13:00 – Michigan had a 3×1 chance but lost control at the MSU blue line.  MSU with a 2×1 the other way, great move by the MSU forward to get Hogan to go down, go around him, tried to slam it in and Chris Summers blocked the post to keep this one scoreless.
13:56 – Penalty to Michigan
14:57 – Centering pass by Langlais and the redirect just misses
15:38 – Good save by Bryan Hogan
16:58 – Penalty is over.
17:45 – Ugly PP so far.  Can’t set up, the Spartans are controlling the puck more passing around and standing still in their zone wasting clock.  Really, just standing still with the puck waiting for someone from U-M to pressure them.
18:58 – Penalty to Michigan State – Brock Shelgren for cross checking
20:00 – Puck has dropped.  Go Blue!

Apparently, Michigan just didn’t bother to show up tonight. At least so far. Let’s see if I get this right. Frozen Four in Minneapolis, Minnesota wins a title. Frozen Four in Madison, Wisconsin wins a title. Frozen Four in Detroit…… Michigan decides to end their streak and not even get to the tourney. Thanks guys!

Well, Michigan has hasn’t won a game in which they trailed going into the third. I don’t see that trend ending tonight.
