Michigan is firing on all cylinders right now and jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead.
During 4×4 play, Chris Summers carried up the middle of the ice, split the defense, and slipped a shot on net that went under Palmisano and AJ Treais was there to knock in the loose puck.
Late in the period, the Wolverines would add two more goals. Summers fired a knuckle-puck from the right point that deflected off two MSU players and trickled across the goal line. Then later Chris Brown turned the corner on the red line, had the puck slide off his stick but right to Brian Lebler on the left slot and he banged it past Palmisano for the 3-0 lead.
MSU starts the second period with about 1:50 on the power play. Shots in the first period were 14-6 Michigan.
Andrew Rowe with a shorthanded goal… 3-1 Michigan.
Jeff Petry shot is stopped by Hogan, big rebound to the left circle and Brett Perlini finds the far corner. 3-2 Michigan almost midway through the 2nd period.
Penalty on Carl Hagelin with about a minute left in the period. MSU doesn’t score before the horn and will start the third period on the PP. That period definitely belonged to MSU and this is anyone’s game.
Shots are 26-13 Michigan. Scoring chances listed as 18-9 Michigan. MSU is 0/3 on the PP and has just one shot on goal during those PPs. Michigan is 0/4 with only three shots on goal. Wow, that seems low. Both teams have won 23 faceoffs.
50 seconds into the third period, Torey Krug throws a shot on goal, stopped in front, Jeff Petry jumps on it for the goal. All tied up.
Penalty to Michigan for elbowing at 1:52 of the third. Lebler in the box.
Hogan with a pair of big saves. Minute left on the MSU PP. Michigan back at full strength.
Shot off the end board, comes out the other side to Treais and he can’t control it… kicked it off his back skate to himself and missed getting a stick on it. Had a slam dunk.
Michigan defense turns it over between the circles, quick shot by MSU and Hogan with the save. 11:05 left…
6:51 left, Dean Chelios picks the pocket of Ben Winnett behind the U-M net and throws it on net and slips the puck past Hogan. 4-3 Spartans on four unanswered goals. Meltdown almost complete…
Penalty to Michigan for goalie interference. Caporusso to the box with 6:11 left. Dumb penalty on Louie’s part. Meltdown continues…
5:48 left, Palmisano comes up big. Eh, Rust didn’t really get a shot off, more just rolled off his stick, but he went flying over the top of Palmisano as Drew covered it up.
Hagelin steals the puck off the goalie’s stick, circles around, shot, blocked, rebound is knocked to Rust and he scores! Huge shorthanded goal for the Wolverines. All tied up again!
Penalty to Louie is over. Four minutes left in regulation.
Loose puck in front of the MSU net, players banging at it… SCOOOORE! Chris Brown! 2:07 left. Brown with the shot in close, Palmisano was down with his leg stretched trying to hug the post, Brown kept whacking at the loose puck and finally slipped it in the corner with an MSU player in the net behind Drew trying to block the corner, too.
Empty net for the Spartans… puck in the netting, 1:09 left
Petry backhand shot, tipped in front and Hogan the save. Some post-whistle pushing. 40.9 left
Empty net chance for Hagelin and he hits the side of the net. Michigan tying the puck up in the MSU zone, Spartans can’t get out. Long pass by MSU and it’s icing with 7.6 seconds left.
Lebler misses an empty net, but who cares… game over! Great game!
