Notre Dame needs to align their overhead camera

By Jason Paul | February 27, 2010

The right call…

…based on the evidence of the one angle provided the refs.

Lets get this out of the way now.  Like others watching, yes, I, too, initially thought from watching the overhead view it was clearly a goal by Chris Brown.  That was pretty much verified when they showed an angle from the back corner, which for some unknown reason they refuse to replay the rest of the game, instead opting for an ice level shot from center ice that doesn’t show squat.

So I recorded the replay during intermission and watched it frame by frame.  The puck hits the right post, shoots across, hits the bar, then comes out.  Unfortunately, based on the angle of the “overhead” camera, which isn’t directly overhead as you can see from the image above but at an angle (if it was directly overhead the goal line and cross bar would be on top of each other…instead the goal line and cross bar are about a third of the way inside the top of the net), it was the right call.

Sorry for the quality of the capture, but based on the overhead angle after the puck hit the right post, it shot across the net right along the goal line (again, based on the overhead angle) and hits the left side (and as you can see from the angle, it’s questionable if it hit the left post or inside top cross bar), then comes out.

So, as much as I hate to say it, based on the evidence, it’s inconclusive and the refs got it right.  Of course, it wasn’t the right call overall, but that’s not their fault.  They had to make the call based on the one angle and based on that angle the puck never crossed the goal line and you couldn’t tell if it hit the left post or inside cross bar.

Wasn’t there talk last year about giving the refs the ability to use all angles from any televised game?  Time to think about that again…or just tell Notre Dame to align their overhead camera properly.
