Game 1: Michigan 5, Michigan State 1 – Final

1st Period

Carl Hagelin, David Wohlberg, and Louie Caporusso scored in a 6:30 span during the middle of the opening stanza to give Michigan a 3-0 jump over Michigan State. But we’ve seen this scenario before…like back in January when Michigan took a 3-0 lead during their game at Joe Louis Arena only to surrender four straight goals before coming back to win, 5-4. Still plenty of hockey to play, but certainly a encouraging start. Shots were 14-6 U-M in the first period.

2nd Period

Steve Kampfer 21 seconds into the second period on the power play makes it 4-0.

12:20 to go in the 2nd period, shots are 18-6 Michigan.

10:40 left,  Hunwick makes a good glove save on a shot from the right circle.  And an audible “Goalie, Sieve!” chant can be heard from the Wolverine fans.

6:00 left, penalty to Glendening for goalie interference.  Chasing down a puck at the right circle, Glendening hopped around the MSU player right into a collision course with Drew Palmisano, who came out of net to play the puck.

5:29 left, Spartans score on the PP.  Shot by Jeff Petry from the left half boards went off the stick of Ben Winnett and possibly off another Spartan in front before passing Hunwick.  Goal is under review, but should stand.  The announcers said Munn is set up to handle all replay angles.  Goal is good.  Credit to Derek Grant, Petry with the assist.

5:03 left, Spartans pressuring and Grant missed a wide open net.  Back the other way, scramble in front of the MSU net and Michigan can’t get a handle on the puck.

4:25 left, penalty to A.J. Treais.  Ugh.  Momentum starting to shift…

4:07 left, penalty to MSU…4×4 for a few.

2:25 left, penalty to Treais is over.  Very brief PP now…penalty to Tropp is  over.

Under a minute to play, SCORE! Palmisano whiffs on a clearing attempt and Luke Glendening steals the puck in the corner, quickly send a pass through the slot.  Shot by the Wolverine player goes off a Spartan right in front of the net and Caporusso pops in the loose puck.

3rd Period

Shots are 25-10 Michigan.  Bobby Jarosz now in net for the Spartans.

16:00 left, still 5-1.  Game mostly in cruise control right now.

12:39 left, penalty to Michigan for interference.  Tristin Llewellyn in the box.

10:39 left, penalty is over.  Good kill by the Wolverines.

8:00 left, still rollin’…

5:30 left, Tropp down the right, throws a centering pass, redirect and a good stop by Hunwick closing the legs.

4:44 left, Hunwick covers a loose puck.

3:00 left, “Lets go blue!” chant breaks out.

Two seconds left, Trevor Nill trying to start something with David Wohlberg.  Nothing came of it, but both to the box.

And this one is over!  Michigan dominates Michigan State, 5-1, in Game 1.

Game 2 is tomorrow night at Munn and hopefully the Wolverines will have even more fans packing their house!  Go Blue!
