Germans trying to break hockey attendance record
By Jason Paul | December 15, 2008
Organizers for the 2010 IIHF World Hockey Championship are aiming to break the world hockey attendance record currently held by Michigan and Michigan State. They plan on holding the opening game at the stadium of Schalke 04, a German soccer club, which seats 75,976.
“This should be a showcase event, which will bring together everything we have learned about staging the IIHF World Championship in a perfect setting,” said IIHF president Rene Fasel, who called it “a landmark for our sport.”
Team Germany will play in the opening game against a TBA opponent on May 7, 2010, and tickets are already available.
In 2001, a world record crowd of 74,554 fans packed Spartan Stadium in East Lansing to watch Michigan and Michigan State battle to a 3-3 tie in what was dubbed “The Cold War.”
To this day, U-M fans are wondering if we’ll ever see a rematch at Michigan Stadium.
