Notes and media round up

By Jason Paul | March 11, 2009

The Ann Arbor News looks at Michigan’s quarterfinal opponent Western Michigan.

Robbie CzarnikFreshman forward Robbie Czarnik suffered an ankle injury during practice Monday and did not practice Tuesday.  His status for this weekend is questionable.  If he is not able to go, Luke Glendening will probably move up to the third line and either Brandon Naurato or Anthony Ciraulo will skate on the fourth line (I’d guess Naurato).

Sophomore forward Carl Hagelin was named U-M’s representative on the CCHA All-Scholar Team and is eligible to win the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award at the CCHA Awards on March 19.

The Ann Arbor News had an excellent interview with U-M head coach Red Berenson a few days ago.  In it he covers topics ranging from being a coach at U-M for 25 years, recruiting, education, and retirement.

The Michigan Daily looks at Berenson’s contract extension and how other teams use Red’s contract status and age to try and influence kids away from Michigan.  Aaron Palushaj said other CCHA coaches used it on him.  Brandon Burlon was told through word-of-mouth that Berenson doesn’t play freshmen.  And, of course, the competition with major junior teams, which Red is critical of some of their tactics.  Berenson says that a CHL representative once visited a 15-year-old Jack Johnson at 7 a.m. at the golf course he was working at to talk about his hockey future.

The Hoover Street Rag looks at the odds of the final eight teams winning the CCHA tournament using KRACH.

Luke Glendening’s younger brother Joe “The Show” has been named one of six finalists for the Detroit Athletic Club Michigan High School Athlete of the Year.  Joe plays football, hockey, and lacrosse for East Grand Rapids.  The winner will be announced May 11 at the Dodge National Athletic Awards at the Detroit Athletic Club.

After being waived by Anaheim and being picked up by Dallas, Brendan Morrison is already facing criticism from the coach just three games into his stint, but Mo is taking it in stride and said he’s faced worse.

Speaking of Morrison, his brother-in-law Daryl Reaugh blogs for The Dallas Morning News and wrote about Brendan staying at his house (or being Brendan’s “billet” family) as he makes the transition to Dallas.

Mike Van Ryn’s “season of injury” came to an end thanks to…another injury.  Van Ryn suffered a torn MCL in his left knee and will miss eight weeks, essentially ending his season.  The good news is that it’s not a torn ACL (think Mark Mitera), which is what they initially suspected.  That would have required surgery and kept him out at least four months and possibly up to a year.

The Hockey Journal takes a peek at Matt Hunwick’s package.  Hey, it’s in the title!  Hunwick is doing a “Chris Summers Experiment” in Boston, where he was recently moved to top line forward for a few games.

Hilary Duff tells People Magazine she is obsessed with hockey thanks to her obsession with boyfriend Mike Comrie.

“I’ve never met anyone who can say a bad word about him,” she gushed about Comrie. “He’s generous, caring and sunny. We just laugh our heads off.”

She obviously hasn’t sat in the stands for a game at Edmonton!
