Montoya traded to Phoenix
By Jason Paul | February 26, 2008
Former Michigan goaltender Al Montoya has been traded to the Phoenix Coyotes as part of a five player swap before the NHL trade deadline.
The Coyotes receive Montoya and forward Marcel Hossa from the New York Rangers in exchange for goalie David LeNeveu, forwards Fredrik Sjostrom and Josh Gratton, and a conditional draft pick.
Montoya is in his third season with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League. In 31 games, he sports a 16-8-3 record with 2.54 GAA and .908 save percentage. He has seen his ups and downs over the last few years due to injuries, and is currently nursing a groin injury. Though he has been called up to the parent club a few times, Montoya has yet to see any action in the NHL.
The sixth overall pick of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Montoya was originally excited about getting drafted by the Rangers, but soon after turning pro Swedish prospect Henrik Lundqvist came to America and had an impressive rookie season with the Rangers. Lundqvist soon became the Rangers starter and recently signed a long term contract, thus seeming to indicate that Montoya would not be getting his shot at the big leagues in New York and a trade was probable.
