A couple of weeks ago, I wrote that the season was over. In a way, I was right. The frustrating, often incomprehensible season of improbable losses and unexplainable mental lapses was over, and the team we all thought U of M would be all season emerged behind the broad shoulders of a 5'7″ walk-on goalie.
This CCHA Tournament win is indeed the most improbable that I can remember and the most gratifying. I'm usually at the Joe trying to figure out which regional the Wolverines would end up in and who they would play. This time, I wasn't really thinking of where they would end up, I just wanted them to win that Mason Cup.
Louie, a guy I have been hard on all year, has woken up with a vengence. This defense is smothering, suffocating, whatever other reference you want to come up with. This team has shown the ability to overcome all the adversity of losing their starting goalie, their captain, and one of their emotional leaders in Glendening.
I don't care which regional they go to, which team they play. I don't care about anything that will happen next weekend. Before this season started, I didn't really think this team could contend for a National Title, but I always expect them to be in the tournament. Now they are. In the most unlikely way.
Maybe some rice pilaf and a nice Chianti?
